We are a young and energetic business. In fact, the idea for Hello Teacher! came about in mid-2012, while founder Mike Cairnduff was teaching English in Zhejiang province, eastern China, as part of an internship program.
Mike was working at a primary school and the semester was drawing to a close. He had loved his time there but wanted to experience what life was like in a different province.
Mike quickly discovered that quality websites specializing in English-teaching jobs in China were hard to come by. There was no ‘one-stop shop’ for reliable and trustworthy information about life as a foreign teacher, either.
One of Mike’s biggest challenges throughout the semester was finding online lesson plans that were of a high standard, had enough content to last a whole lesson, and were free.
It was out of this gap in the market that Hello Teacher! was born.
Why the name 'Hello Teacher!'?
The name was inspired by young Chinese students who call out “Hello teacher!” to any foreign teacher they see.
The expression is a direct translation from the Chinese “老师好!” (pronounced 'laoshi hao') which students say to their Chinese teachers. Whilst it is a friendly and grammatically correct expression in English, it would rarely (if ever) be said by a Western student in their own country.
This humorous quirk is a key characteristic of Hello Teacher!
