Welcome to TESOL Planet!
Are you considering teaching English as a foreign language?
Would you like to travel, explore and teach in Central America?
Maybe you want to be part of a community and contribute to its development?
The aim of the 4 Week TEFL course in Granada, Nicaragua is to thoroughly prepare you for teaching EFL in any overseas environment. You will be able to prepare lessons for all age groups and levels and feel confident when selecting materials and activities. Students will also get real hands on experience, designing and teaching their own English classes to the local community.
We are passionate about enriching the local community. Many of our English classes are offered for free. We also have a scholarship program for some of the most impoverished people of Granada. We are constantly investing into this scheme and its funding is aided through the TEFL programs.
Our school is perfectly setup to offer an incredible learning experience. It is located in a beautiful, colonial style house, built around two open gardens; creating a very fresh and airy space.
As part of our service to our TEFL students we will help organise accommodation, meals and offer Spanish lessons as part of the course. This way you will truly experience what it is like to learn a foreign language and be able to empathise with your own students. We aim to provide a holistic learning experience beyond just teaching a methodology.
Our commitment to our students does not stop after graduation; we will be on hand to help you put together a CV, introduce you to local employers and practice interviews with you. We enjoy and encourage staying in touch with all of our graduates and are always available to offer advice if it’s needed.
This will normally consist of input sessions in the morning and early afternoon followed by teaching practice where as well as teaching yourself you will observe other trainees teach. This will allow you to learn from your peers. After teaching practice a critique session is held where both trainees and trainer sit together, exchange constructive feedback and reflect on the different lessons they observed. The onus is on reflection as we believe this to be the most important component of the TEFL course. What really matters, more than a good performance in the classroom even, is for you to be able to reflect on your own and others’ teaching experience and learn from it for your future development.
A typical weekly schedule may look like this:
10.00 am – 13.00 pm: Input sessions
13.00 pm – 14.00 pm: Lunch
14.00 pm – 15.00 pm: Preparation for teaching practice
15.00 pm – 16.30 pm: Lesson planning
16.30 pm – 18.00 pm: Teaching practice
18.00 pm – 19.00 pm: Critique session
An average class is around 5 students keeping the quality high and giving you lots of one-on-one attention.
Upon successful completion of the course you will receive:
Level 5 Certificate in TESOL with Teaching Practice (CELTA/Trinity alternative), accredited by ALAP
INTESOL Certificate in TESOL (graded)
Course Transcript, issued by ALAP
Most of our students choose to live with a host family during their course because everything is taken care of for them; allowing them to fully focus on the course. This includes three meals a day. It’s also a very good way to either improve your Spanish or create a good foundation on which to build. All rooms are private, clean and quiet, providing a comfortable stay for all our students. The host families that we work with all have years of experience hosting people from other countries. They are very flexible, adaptable and accommodating. The cost of this is $100 per week.
We also offer accommodation to our students in the same building as the school and living with some of the teachers. It’s a beautiful, old colonial style house with two gardens, study areas and TV room. Rooms are private with a shared bathroom between 2 and have AC as an extra option; breakfast is also included. We have found that students who take this option add a certain, extra value to the course in the way of ‘comradery’ with their fellow students. The cost of this is $85 per week.
We will help arrange all of the above before your arrival.
